According to a new report appearing in The Hindu today, (2nd Feb 2018), members of the Tree Foundation’s Sea Turtle Protection Force, Mr. T.A, Pugalarasan and Mr. Jayaseelan, both residing at Periya Neelankarai Kuppam, accompanied by Ms. Supraja Dharani, chairperson of the said Foundation noticed a group of ‘ Indo-Pacific Dolphins’ holding something above the water, off the coast adjacent to the Neelakarai Kuppam on Thursday morning, (1st Feb 2018). which they later discovered to be to be a body of a ‘dolphin calf”, the Death of whom this group of Dolphins was mourning.

Not only that, these dolphins had been taking turns in extending their support in order to keep the dead calf afloat. While each dolphin was taking the round to support, the rest of the dolphins kept circling.

According to Ms. Dharini, it is common among the animals as dolphins and chimpanzees to mourn the dead, as the humans do. She further added that they have not been able to identify the home range of these dolphins; if this has to be done, there has to be surveyed for at least six years. However, it is not uncommon to spot them off the Nelankarai coast between January and April and June July.
