The government will abolish Speed Governors on on commercial vehicles and taxis in the Country, doing away with a rule that restricts their maximum speed at 80 kmph.

Transport minister Nitin Gadkari said that he will “soon demolish the governor system” meant for commercial vehicles as limiting speed had no role in tackling the rising number of fatalities and accidents on the roads.

“Speed is not behind the accidents in the country. We are now having 6-lane and 8-lane highways, and what is the need to restrict speed?” the minister asked. “The governor is only a way to promote corruption on the roads.”

Installation of speed governors on buses, trucks, small commercial vehicles and taxis had been made mandatory by an order of Gadkari’s ministry after several strictures in this regard by a host of courts across various parts of the country. Even the Supreme Court had raised the matter when talking about measures to control the rising number of on the road.

Gadkari expressed displeasure regarding the intervention of  courts in the matter. “Making such decisions is our prerogative. While I respect the courts, this duty has been  to us.”

The issue of installation of speed governors had been opposed by the auto industry which said that the rapidly-improving highway infrastructure in the country makes it a deterrent.

Gadkari also said that the government has decided to exempt electric vehicles and automobiles run on alternative fuel from permit requirements in a bid to boost the population of such vehicles in the country.

“We have decided to exempt EVs and all vehicles including auto-rickshaws, buses, taxis run on alternative fuel like ethanol, bio-diesel, CNG, methanol and bio-fuel, from permit requirements. We have taken the decision to make these requirements. We have taken the decision to make these permit-free,” the transport minister said.
