10 Insane Window Dressing Ideas from Morplan

How often do you see someone stand there looking at your window display?
If they’ve stopped to stare, you’ve got them thinking.
Ideally your brilliant window display should prompt them to then cross the threshold, or if they do walk away this time, hopefully you’ve planted the seeds of temptation and they are walking away with thoughts of returning.

Window dressing is a very powerful art form, the influence of which should not be underestimated. So, to help your business stand out from the crowd, we’ve tapped into the experience of the experts at Morplan – the leading wholesale provider of all window dressing supplies to the UK retail industry – on how to create the perfect, enticing shop window display. From their dealings with retailers up and down the country, they share with us some of the most eye-catching window dressing idea’s they have seen, and loved:

1. Eye-catching colour pop:

Colour blocking can’t help but draw the eye in. Obvious colour ideas include a striking red for Valentine’s Day, yellows and greens for Easter etc. Gather the items you want to display and arrange them in a quirky fashion based on your chosen colour scheme.

It need not be expensive to create the expanse of colour. Buy coloured tissue paper or crafting paper in bulk, drape velvet display fabric as a back drop or go for a very plain white backdrop – perhaps using a white slatwall display unit then showcase products of your chosen colour sporadically so that they pop out of the white background and don’t need to vie for attention. If you want to invest in some key display pieces, check out the stunning white Heritage range of furniture.

This example takes the idea a step further – using a pop of colour to capture the eye and then a subconscious activity to maintain attention. The shop owner above created a display with different types of brooms in an orange set with words “Which broom?” printed across the glass beneath them during Hallowe’en. This displayed the story line of a witch on broom and also helped to showcase his collection of brooms.

2. Always aim for eye-level (from the street)

Merchandisers know the value of positioning beacon brands at eye-level and it’s a tip that transcends to any window display. Mark the eye-level of your store’s display window from the street with the help of masking tape or coloured dot stickers. This is helpful because from inside a window, you cannot estimate the eye level of the street, as the floor inside is usually not at street level.

Put your key pieces along the tape, but don’t limit yourself to just displaying them from floor height. Suspend a few items from the ceiling using clear thread – making sure they drop to a viewable level. The jewellery store above displays it’s finest jewellery pieces on the counter in jewellery display cases as well as suspended from the ceiling inside pink cages providing two separate viewing opportunities.

3. Show off through props:

Make use of props to display your objects in the window – from mannequins to stands. For instance, the coloured boxes used here catch the eye of the beholder more than a black suit alone would. Boxes are easy to paint in your choice of colour or use coloured counter top display squares on their sides for an instant splash of colour. These come in a range of eye-popping colours (green, fuchsia, black, white, grey, red and orange) and can be over painted for use in your next colour theme.

Top the boxes with playfully posed abstract mannequins to create a really eye-catching scenario.

4. Use big things to display the tiny things:

If you have invested in some really lovely display furniture (such as the wonderfully rustic Cargo range which is similar to what you see here) why not make it work harder for you by letting it have time in the spotlight. Move key pieces of furniture to the shop window and use as a base to show off smaller items that may otherwise get ‘lost’ in the whole picture.

The picture above is a great example of how the ‘feel’ of the shop has been brought to the fore, allowing passers by to really get an idea of your offering.

Of course, this can work doubly hard for you if you are also selling the furniture! Simply add a beautiful price tag to communicate that the item is for sale while not detracting from the overall visual.

5. Use lines and shapes to catch the customer eye:

Dressing up your window by creating a line of products sold in your store will certainly attract the eye of the customer. Using acrylic display stands of varying heights and formations you can neatly display products in eye catching geometric shapes to create an interesting foreground. For instance, the cosmetic shop window above displays its cosmetics in a linear fashion, broken up and embellished with artificial flowers. For a really fresh look why not include a few real blooms?!

6. Create a more effective window display using thoughtfully positioned lighting:

Lighting is one of the most important components in dressing up a window – particularly for night-time viewers. Although a couple of spotlights are enough to point your key products, it can look very staid. Check out Plug n Play lighting options – you can go for track lighting or stalk spotlights. These can be moved about in moments and directed according to each and every different display.

Top tip: if you illuminate key items at the sides and front you can create an enticing 3D effect as shown in the image above.

7. Create a dramatic effect by using bold colours, shapes and props:

This stunning window display can’t help but attract your attention. Think outside the box and treat the whole window space as a blank canvas. Once you have an idea, bring it to life with bold colour, shapes and props. But don’t forget to remain true to the products you actually sell.

8. Don’t underestimate the power of simplicity:

Quite often simple is best. Create a clean, white backdrop and display a few key pieces beautifully. This look shows that you are so proud to be purveyors of certain items that you will gladly let them speak for themselves.

Highlight your chosen pieces with directional lighting, and keep the rest of the window area clear of clutter.

Whether you choose to include price tags on these key pieces or not is up to you.

9. Take advantage of quirky themes:

Take advantage of the season or an upcoming festival. There are obvious key times of the year when the window shopper can be inspired to come in and buy their presents from your shop – Christmas, Easter, Mother’s Day etc. But at other times, use an imaginative theme to grab attention, and illustrate that your display’s are fresh and you are ‘of the moment’. It could be anything from Wimbledon (why not colour theme with strawberries and cream or the vivid purple and green colours associated with the tournament) or use a multi-armed hat stand to show off your wares when it’s Ascot.

We’ve seen the white ladder from the Heritage collection used to great effect to showcase themes.

10. Use window graphics to highlight ideas:

Whether you want to highlight any kind of offer or sale on your products, using window graphics and stickers on your display windows is a great way. You can also communicate your contact details with your consumers by making use of customisable window graphics and list the items your store specialises in.

Just please, please, please don’t waste your valuable window space advertising for others. Use a neat and tidy chalkboard or noticeboard for this instead, a literature stand inside the door or if you really must put up a poster, please use poster-stik – an easy to peel off adhesive that won’t leave a nasty residue!

We hope these ideas have inspired you. Morplan offers everything you’ll need to create a great window display, from the basic window dresser’s supplies (sticky fixers, Velcro, poster-stik) to decorative fabrics, papers and display options – most are held in stock and ready for same day despatch so why not take a look.
