We often advise people on how to make any particular room look its best. This is not the simple matter some would make it out to be. Intuition would tell you to paint the room white. But while we find that this works most of the time it does not work all the time.

The amount of light in the room is one factor. If there is a lot of natural light then white works well. I think our brains are wired up to like gentle sunlight, and a white walled room lets the natural look of Sunshine really shine through. But this backfires for artificial lighting. If you don’t have natural light the white room looks sterile.

One way to deal with a white room is to install a different type of lighting. The bulbs that imitate sunlight make a big difference, but the position of the bulb(s) is a huge factor. A nice candle light or fireplace Colour can also look good, but after some experience I found they look even better if the room colour is crème or some colour other than white.

If it’s a dark room you do better with something light. A light version of just about any colour will work will, and make the room feel brighter and slightly bigger. These dark rooms don’t change as much during the day and night as there is minimal sunshine, so you won’t really have to assess it under two different circumstances.  As long as the walls are light you can choose any colour that goes with the furniture and décor.

Don’t be too influenced by magazine and internet images. The images are often photoshopped leaving the colour schemes vary much altered. At the same time a photo of you own room can be digitally altered to give a reasonable indication of how a certain colour would look.

Talk to you housepainter about what will work with each different room. It is in everybody’s best interests for the results to be good. And consider some different lighting and give you home a rather different look.
