Interview Skills that Win the Job

Today’s job market is one of the toughest in decades. Competition is at its highest not only because the number of highly qualified applicants outstrips the number of jobs available, but also because employers are more nervous than ever of making the wrong hiring choice.   This has caused a shift in the way employers hire and their expectations of candidates. Because employers’ expectations have soared, this means the game of interviewing has also changed dramatically.   The days of brushing down your resume the night before an interview and hoping to ‘wing it’ on the day are long gone. Most recruiters will tell you that the person who gets hired for the job most often is not the candidate with the best qualifications or experience; it is the candidate that is most skilled at handling the interview process.   This is because even if you are the best candidate for the job, you still have to convince the interviewer that you are and the only way you can do that is by having superior interview skills.   On average, most job seekers don’t achieve interview success until the fifth job interview, that’s because by the time they get to interview number five, they’ve had enough practice and are competent and confident enough to deliver a decent performance. In other words they have acquired the skill to interview effectively.   The downside of this approach is it can take a long time to secure an interview and in the process, you can end up losing time, money and motivation.   How do I get excellent interview skills?   There are in reality only two ways to improve your interview skills; the first is to attend loads of interviews (we all know the time, cost and stress that involves), the second option is to work with a professional interview coach.   When you work with an expert interview coach you get the opportunity to participate in an interview situation very similar to the real interview.
