Why Training Remote Employees Is Essential

One of the conditions for the development of the company is the professional growth of employees. Training is beneficial not only for the employee but also for the employer because by investing money in employee training, the employer will receive even more income in the future. By training, the employee improves his qualifications, which can contribute to career advancement and wages. And the employer gets qualified personnel who will perform the work with high quality.

Difficulties of moving to remote work

Financial matters

The first and obvious problem of moving to a Remote location is the illusion of saving money. With the transition to telecommuting, the first thing that companies want to give up is rented space. But there are nuances here. The lease has its conditions and penalties. Usually, the tenant must communicate their intention to terminate the agreement a couple of months before the move begins. Accordingly, all this time, you will have to pay for unnecessary spaces. Having given up the office, you will also have to find a place for your equipment. The cost of the services of a transport company depends on the size and specifics of the company.

Team spirit

The team spirit in a remote work environment is a matter of collaboration, trust, and transparency. Many companies have problems with this. Strengthening teamwork is a strategic challenge for businesses of all types and sizes, but it is essential and challenging for distributed teams. Company culture is crucial because it influences how employees and customers perceive the company - and this largely determines how successful the business will be.

Trust and psychological safety are two of the most critical elements of remote work culture: an atmosphere of mutual respect and confidence that the team will not reject you. It is on them that you need to rely on building team spirit among remote employees. You might even consider referral bonuses to your remote workers so they are more encouraged to work even harder the next time. The manager is obliged to do everything possible to create an atmosphere of psychological safety and support the team spirit of remote employees!

Drop-in productivity.

The longer employees stay remote - the more companies report a drop in productivity. So, on average, in April 2020, 56% of companies rated the productivity of remote work as "excellent." Six months later, their enthusiasm has noticeably diminished. 40% note the beginning of a decline in productivity. A quarter of them add about employee burnout due to the need to work from home every day. So how does remote work in a pandemic affect productivity? Software development, where the remote operation has been used widely and for a long time, can serve as a guideline.

When is it better to use distance learning

The traditional format of corporate training is full-time. For this, companies use welcome training, seminars, courses, and tests. At times, they might even partner with quality translation services that will especially help with the training of foreign employees. The full-time form is familiar to employees. She gives high results and deep knowledge. But there are situations in which face-to-face training does not work as efficiently as we would like, for example, in the field of remote interpreting. Face-to-face training may not work if:

  1. The company has many employees. There are not enough resources for training, certification, and professional development: not enough trainers, little time for training. A significant turnover of personnel hinders the achievement of the result: employees quit before they have time to train.
  2. The company has many branches. Coaches cannot devote enough time to all employees, or a lot of money is spent on their travel. While trainers improve the qualifications of personnel in one branch, employees of another have time to forget everything. This seriously reduces the effectiveness of training.
  3. Training is conducted irregularly. Face-to-face training does not work well without repetition. The knowledge that an employee receives during the course is forgotten or outdated over time.
  4. It isn't easy to control how employees learn knowledge. Companies cannot always provide feedback: employees study at seminars, undergo training and study methodological materials. But how they acquired knowledge is difficult to determine.

Advantages of a distance-learning format

The distance learning format helps companies to solve several significant problems simultaneously. First, to adapt to newcomers in a short time, even if they are on the other side of the country. Secondly, improve your skills every day using modern gadgets. Further - At any time, check the qualification level of personnel.|

Outside the workplace training methods

Outside the workplace, training is needed to learn theory and learn how to behave in a way required by the company environment.

  • Lectures. Students receive theoretical knowledge and practical experience. Lectures are considered passive and not the most effective teaching method.
  • Programmed courses. They are effective when employees need theoretical knowledge. This method of training employees is more active than the previous one.
  • Conferences, round table discussions, discussions, meetings with management, excursions. Students conduct discussions, during which they learn how to behave in certain situations and develop logical thinking. This method of training employees is active.
  • A method of training managers, in which they independently solve problems from production practice. A problem is modeled, and the group members must solve it by combining their theoretical and practical skills. Participants process information, are creative in decision-making while developing their thinking.
  • Business games. A certain situation in production is simulated, students are given roles, and they must offer alternative points of view. Thus, employees will learn how to behave in different situations, for example, in negotiations.
  • Training. Training is held every day. One employee teaches the other the basics of the activity. Demonstrations, intensive training, and hands-on work are conducted to increase the efficiency of the activities.
  • Self-education. The easiest method to train employees in an organization is to train employees as convenient for them. But nothing will work if they do not want to acquire new knowledge. The room and coach are not needed in this case.

Suppose training of qualified personnel is carried out. It will bring the desired effect only if the costs associated with it do not exceed the costs of increasing labor productivity through factors related to mistakes in hiring employees. Determining whether the training of the organization's employees has led to the desired results is problematic. But it is easy to calculate the economic efficiency of training in the form of cost reduction.

Final word

If you find that face-to-face training does not always work effectively in your company environment, do not despair. You can always transfer part or all of the training to a distance form. Leverage the experience of companies that have redesigned their training systems and thereby increased efficiency.
