In the hub of skyscraper one more skyscraper has made its mark which is shining high in sky. Its 0-14 tower- an office skyscraper located in one of most commercial area of Dubai i.e. Business Bay. 0-14 is designed by the leading architectural pair of Reiser + Umemoto of RUR Architecture. The story behind their winning of this project was quite interesting with twist and turns. Initially 0-14 was not supposed to design by this pair. They entered into competition for Business Bay district by Dubai Developers for another site in which they lost it to Zaha Hadid. Later on, Shahab Lutfi – one of the developer, who was about to open his office shows his interest in there design. Coincidentally he was working with Khalid Alnajjar – a Dubai Architect who used to be the student under Reiser in Columbia University and through this contact he recommended the design of Reiser and Umemoto. Finally 0-14 tower made with the collaboration of Creek Side Development Company of Dubai and RUR Architecture of New York The project has started on 2006 and completed in 2009. It has achieved Siver, Emporis Skyscraper Award in 2009 , ACEC National Honor Award for being Excellent in Engineering Design in 2010 and won Best tall building in Africa and Middle East by Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat.
0-14 tower is a twenty-two storey building which is placed over a two storey podium. Being an out and out commercial building it does not have straightway simple and corporate feel about its design. The design is highly innovative which makes 0-14 stands out in whole Business Bay. The exterior of the building is actually a shield over the real building. This shield is designed as a perforated reinforced steel which performed as an exoskeleton for the building. This shell is not only for creative purpose but it highly contributes in maintaining the temperature inside. The distance between shell and wall of helps to avoid the hot air to enter into building and keeps the surface of wall cool. The shield also functions as chimney and ventilator to purify the air, wind and sunlight. The total floor area covered by building is 28,000 m2. The loads of appreciation is not only limited to Dubai but it got its fair share of best reviews from all over the world.
