Four Questions to Ask Before Buying an Intrusion Alarm System

Whether you are considering having an Intrusion Alarm installed or are already actively looking for a security service company, taking a moment to make sure you ask the right questions can help you make the best choice for your facility.

We’ve listed four important questions to consider when trying to decide what intrusion alarm system is the best for your needs.

1.  Do you have accreditation?

Before you have a security company representative come to your building to provide a quote, ensure that they have the required accreditations to perform the service.  There are countless companies that claim to be accredited however, they should be able to present you with some level of documentation to confirm their claims.  Some accreditations to look for include:

  • Canadian Security Association – Alarm Technicians Course (CANASA-ATC)
  • Underwriters Laboratories of Canada (ULC)
  • The Monitoring Association
  • Various Manufacturer’s Training Certificates

2.  What kind of equipment do I want?

There are an endless number of devices that can be used in conjunction with your security system such as motion sensors, security cameras, door and window contacts, smoke detectors, temperature alarms, and automation applications.  You need to decide on the functionality you are looking for, which will help to dictate the devices that will be perfect for you.  Be sure to relay these desires to your security provider so that they can prepare an accurate proposal that will satisfy your needs.

3.  Who will be monitoring your intrusion alarm system?

When you get an intrusion alarm system for your building, you will need to consider whether you would like the system to be professionally or self-monitored.  A professionally monitored system will provide 24/7 protection for your property so that you’re not on the hook to constantly have an eye on your facility.  If you choose to go this route, ensure you ask about the Monitoring company’s qualifications.  Ideally, you will want a monitoring company with a Five Diamond Monitoring Center Designation from The Monitoring Association.

4.  How Much?

The most important thing you will consider is the cost of adding the intrusion alarm system to your facility.  You may be under the impression that all intrusion alarms are expensive however, it’s important to remember that they are all scalable, and a system can be built using a variety of budgets.  When evaluating prices, account for monthly costs, equipment costs, monitoring costs, and installation fees. Keep in mind that savings may come at a cost of service. Be sure to ask about the qualifications of the installers and dispatchers who you will be dealing with. Someone on the other end of the phone call who can help walk you through a stressful situation is often worth the price. Ask the questions to know exactly what you’re getting for your money.
