Several months ago, we let you know that the 2G system that has been used for almost two decades to transmit alarm signals was nearing the end of its life cycle. Over the past year, the phasing out process of 2G networks has increased, and in some cases, carriers have already started using slower frequencies for their 2G. The result of this is a less reliable connection and slower speeds for networks that still use this level of service. If you are still using a 2G network for your current security system, this phasing out process will have a negative effect on its ability to communicate. Because of this, it is crucial to consider replacing or upgrading your current 2G system.
What is 2G Cellular Communication?
2G service was introduced in 1991 as the first wireless technology developed since analog to send communication signals. Since that time, 2G has been surpassed by the faster and more reliable 3G and 4G/LTE networks.
What Does a Potential 2G Sunset Mean For You and Your Security Alarm Monitoring and Fire Alarm Monitoring?
In the coming months, a FMC Client Services Representative will be in contact with all of our customers with regards to the degradation of the 2G service. At that time, we will be presenting you with options for a smooth transition to the 3G network.
While we have not been provided a firm “sunset” date on the 2G network from Rogers as has been provided in the United States (AT&T has advised that they will shutdown their 2G network at the beginning of 2017, for example) it is our experience that the network is degrading resulting in sudden and unexpected loss of signal from our 2G customers. When this happens, we have no choice but to perform a service call and upgrade the cellular communicator.
Additionally, our service provider (Connect24) ceased allowing us to activate 2G communicators at the end of 2014. FMC ceased installing 2G units well prior to this date, however there are units which remain in the field.
An additional benefit to moving to a 3G set-up, particularly for our commercial Security Alarm system clients is the availability of the Alarm.com service and interactive security monitoring. Some systems can often accommodate this service, and the ability to arm and disarm your commercial Security Alarm Monitoring system remotely, and receive real-time alerts – often at no additional annual charges for the service.
