Fresh flowers arrangements are usually used to mark a special occasion, brighten someone’s day or just animate a room. How long these flowers will last depends on the type they are, as well as what you do to preserve them.
The first factor to keep in mind to determine how long fresh flower arrangements will last is the type of arrangement. According to many studies, some of the floral cuts that last the most are carnations, mini carnations, Anthurium and the Bethlehem flower. These varieties can last up to 14 days or more.
Some Examples of how long other types of flowers will last are daisies, chrysanthemum, gladiolus which last between 7-14 days. Anemone, delphinium, freesias, gerberas which last between 5-7 days. Cornflowers, narcissus, iris, lily of the valley, peonies and tulips can last between 3-5 days. Others that just last a few days are the Gardenias which last between 1-2 days.

The Best time to cut the flowers is in the morning or late at night when it is cooler. The flowers are also more fragrant in the morning and full of stored food. The stage of maturity in which a flower is, can affect also how long they live. It is best cut flowers such as roses, daffodils, iris and gladiolus when they are still in the form of an outbreak, then the flowers will open and mature when they are in the flower arrangement. Flowers such as marigolds and delphiniums, on the other hand, should be completely open before they are cut.

To cut them use a sharp knife without teeth or a pair of garden scissors cutting the stems in a diagonal way and immediately place them in warm water. If you bought pre-cut flowers, you still have to cut the stems when you get home to give them a fresh start. For best results, cut the stems under water to avoid bubbles that do not allow the stems to immerse in it. You will also need to cut off all excess foliage that will be submerged in the water. This will prevent it from settling in the water and creating bacteria that will shorten the life of the flowers.

Keep fresh flowers out of the sun’s rays, it is also best to keep them away from fans, radiators, drafts and television sets, so they stay cool. At night, move the flowers to a cooler place or refrigerate them to help them live longer. Keep the flowers away from the fruit. They exude a chemical that will age flowers faster.
Those were a few tips and also to answer the question, do they need to be transported with water when you buy them off a wholesaler? The answer is, it depends on the flower you get, most of them don’t but make sure you ask the florist or wholesaler before you order them.
