Some hit-and-run accidents involve more than 1 vehicle

On Dec. 9 at approximately 7:15 p.m., Police were called to the scene of a hit-and-run Accident involving the Death of a 13-year-old girl. Police took a person into custody who is believed to have struck the teenager. Further investigation, however, revealed that, as is the case in some hit-and-run accidents, more than one vehicle was involved in the Missouri girl's death.

Witnesses led police to a storage business where a blue Volkswagen Beetle similar to the one fleeing the scene was found. It had sustained damage, and pieces of it were missing. The evidence at the scene supported the officer's belief that this was the vehicle that hit the teen. Moreover, it appeared that the front bumper was being chemically cleaned. The 42-year-old owner of the vehicle was taken into custody.

That was not the end of the story. Further investigation determined that a second vehicle struck the girl, and it did not remain at the scene either. Police impounded a pickup truck in order to search it for evidence. The 38-year-old owner was arrested as well.

While investigators continue to verify the details of this tragedy, the family of the victim may exercise its right to file a wrongful death claim against the party or parties deemed responsible for the teen's death. If a Missouri court rules that her death was due to the negligence of one or both drivers, it may consider an award of damages often seen in hit-and-run accidents. Any monetary judgment granted can help with the financial burdens that often accompany a premature death.
