Every Day Elders are Being Abused

Every Day Elders Are Being Abused

Many people are surprised when they discover just how common elderly Abuse is. What makes things worse is when the elder abuse goes unnoticed. This usually happens because we either choose not to pay attention or simply aren’t aware of the signs and symptoms to look for.

If you suspect an elderly person is being physically or emotionally abused then it’s you’re responsibility to report it. Unfortunately the reality is that there are a surprising number of people who don’t notice the tell-tale signs of abuse. What’s even more disastrous is the alarming number of people who actually do notice a problem, but then make the mistake of thinking somebody else will take care of it.

But here’s the heart-breaking reality: history is riddled with examples of the average person looking the other way because they didn’t hold themselves responsible for the health and safety of others. Abuse continues to happen not because people are necessarily evil, but instead they may not notice what’s really happening until it’s too late. By learning what signs to look for you’ll be able to stop the elderly from being abused and prevent any further harm from happening.

Places of Elder Abuse

Recent studies have shown that elderly abuse is most likely to happen within assisted living facilities, retirement homes and even with professional caregivers.

Who are the Abusers

We must remember that abusers could be anyone from a nurse, doctor, medical aid worker, and even a family member. It is recommended to keep in touch with your loved ones to make sure they are being properly cared for. Just because they take care of the elderly does not mean that they have the same values and respect for your loved one.

Common types of Abuse

The most common types of abuse are emotional and physical. Physical abuse could be when a caretaker hits or aggressively moves a senior, whereas emotional is when a family member or a medical worker talks down or verbally bullies a senior.

How to Identify the Abuse

There are many signs to look for to see if your elderly loved ones are being abused. One of the best ways is to check on them weekly and see if you notice any changes in their appearance, speaking or mood that differ from the previous weeks. If you notice anything different you should ask them what may be bothering them or if they are upset about something.
