Modi inaugurates The Bombay Art Society in suburban Bandra.

Art should be patronised and sponsored by the State, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he inaugurated the building of The Bombay Art Society in suburban Bandra on Saturday.

Inaugurating the new structure, Mr. Modi thanked NCP chief Sharad Pawar for allotting the land for housing the Bombay Art Society Complex near Rang Sharda auditorium in Bandra.

“Art should have no boundaries. It should be state-sponsored and it is state’s responsibility to nurture it,” Mr Modi said. “Art is ageless; race, region and religion-less, as well as timeless,” he said expanding the three letters in his characteristic style.

Mr. Modi said he had suggested in his Mann Ki Baat address recently that Railway Ministry should use suburban railway platforms as open art galleries to encourage and showcase the art of local artists. “You can see people painting railway platforms in an aesthetic colourful way. It is not a state programme. It is done by people and is more effective and influential message of cleanliness than any speech on cleanliness,” he said.

He also urged software developers to create digital platforms to expand the richness of Indian art.

Maharashtra Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Mr Pawar were among the dignitaries present at the function.

The Prime Minister will inaugurate the Make in India Centre housing 27 pavilions at MMRDA Grounds around noon and will flag off the weeklong “Make in India Week” initiative at the National Sports Club of India on Saturday evening.
