Following the birth of the royal baby, Charlotte Elizabeth Diana, the Natural Sapphire Company have been working around the clock to complete our commemorative Royal Baby Rattle, costing over $45,000.

 Talk Of The Town

Word about our creation is all the rage, it’s resulted in phenomenal interest from media outlets worldwide. With so much interest in this historically significant piece, we’ve decided to document the production process of our rattle from start to finish.

 Designing The Rattle

Last week, our designers created a 3-D model of our rattle in Cad-Cam, a highly sophisticated 3-D jewelry modelling program. This design program allows our designers to create the desired object to the exact millimeter.

Designing The Rattle To Specific Measurements

The resulting design will be printed out in resin on 3 dimensional printers next week. That’s right, there’s such a thing as a 3-D printer! After this crucial step,we’ll take our resin printings in for casting, turning our 3-D model into metal. More on this in the coming weeks.

Design Challenges 

The challenges of producing this piece have been significant. Technically difficult because of all the fine pave (625 hand-set gems) work used to decorate the rattle, and also because of the detailed molding of teddy bears, and bows and ribbons into the white-gold.

Designing An Object With Such Great Detail Takes Skill

The Details 

The rattle itself is being cast in 18K White Gold. Included in the metal moulding are the above mentioned four teddy bear motifs as well as bows and ribbons. The rattle will be adorned with a total of 625 gem stones, laid out to create a beautiful union jack on the rattle’s ball: Stones will also feature on the handle and stem.

Figuring Out Stone Sizes For The Rattle

Of the  625 gems used, 320 are Blue Sapphires, ranging in size from 2 -1.50 mm; 201 are Rubies, 2 mm wide; plus there are 89 Diamonds of between 2.3 mm and 1 mm. In addition there are eight pear shaped Blue Sapphires, and four pear shaped Rubies measuring 4 mm x 2 mm each. A truly incredible sight.

Details Ready For Printing

The rattle will measure 4.6 inches in length and the total weight of white gold used will be 229 grams (or 147 dwt when weighed using 18K white gold).
