With all the comic book movies coming at us, we haven’t forgotten about Disney. There’s a new Disney princess headed to the big screen in November, and we got to know her a little bit better thanks to some news coming out of San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend. We like what we’re seeing.
Moana is set in ancient Polynesia, and will follow Princess Moana Waialiki as she takes to the seas with Maui, a demi-god, to have her own hero’s journey. Well, chances were good she wouldn’t be dating a demi-god by the end of the movie, but it turns out she won’t be falling head over heels for anyone she meets, either. In a nice change of pace, Moana will leave love on the sidelines, with directors John Musker and Ron Clements confirming at an SDCC panel that Moana will not have a love interest in the movie. Disney aside, it’s at least a little bit stunning to see how few movies ignore romantic plots or subplots for lead characters in general, which makes the change all the more refreshing.
The directors had a few other things to say at SDCC, and it sounds like Moana will be a departure from the norm in more ways than one. There will be animals in the movie, but unusually for Disney, they’ll act like animals, too — no speaking roles to be found here. Pretty interesting stuff, but then Musker and Clements dropped the real bomb — Dwayne Johnson, better known as The Rock in professional wrestling, is voicing Maui in the film. That’s not news — what is news is that Maui will sing a song during the movie, and it will indeed be The Rock doing the singing. We genuinely cannot wait to hear this.
We won’t have to wait too much longer, either. Moana is on track to arrive in theaters on November 23 of this year.
