Crystal Pepsi is Officially Making a Comeback, Along with the Oregon Trail

OK, we get it. The ’90s are bankable. With Coca-Cola bringing Surge back and the television industry trying to bring back what seems like the entire decade, Pepsi has decided to pile on by officially re-releasing their clear Crystal Pepsi, after only a yearlong run between ’92 and ’93. It’s only a matter of time before flannel is back in, if it isn’t already.

In fact, it seems like we’re in the try anything phase of nostalgia marketing, if Crystal Pepsi is coming back. As you might have surmised from its short initial run, Crystal Pepsi didn’t do all that well the first time around. The caffeine-free (we’re already off to a bad start) Pepsi alternative is coming back nonetheless, after Pepsi saw a big enough base of support from their promotional giveaway late last year, when they gave away 13,000 six-packs of 16-ounce bottles — presumably, just finding 13,000 takers was convincing enough.

No special promotion this year, though — Crystal Pepsi is coming back to store shelves and will try to beat its previous high score. Pepsi is shipping it out to the United States and Canada starting August 8 and July 11, respectively. It’s possible that it’ll just be around for this summer, but I’m sure strong sales will convince Pepsi to keep it around for a little while longer.

Why just bring back one piece of ’90s nostalgia, though? The Oregon Trail has been re-released and re-purposed more times than I can count, and now we can mark one more tally in the latter category. Come July 7, you’ll be able to play a Crystal Pepsi version of the game at, which presumably will not involve dysentery (we’ll keep our fingers crossed, though). Looks more like a rad cross-country road trip, although poisonous creatures make appearances. We may be more excited for this than the comeback of Crystal Pepsi itself.

If this is Pepsi’s way of going to war with Coca-Cola on the battleground of nostalgia, I’m not sure they brought the right weapon. Judging from last year’s giveaway, there’s definitely some hype around Crystal Pepsi, but it’s a straight novelty. How do you compete with Surge, which has the power to keep you awake for at least one night, if not disrupt sleep for the entire week?

Anyway, hype video? You know there’s a hype video.
