We have all heard of jet-setting, but have you ever heard of set-jetting? This is one of the latest trends to pop up in the travel industry, in which travelers are increasingly visiting the sets of their favorite TV shows and films.
Now, this is actually a win-win for both fans and local communities. While viewers get to “fangirl” and see their beloved fictional sets in the flesh, communities actually benefit from increased local tourism by an average of 31 percent.
Plus, with a plethora of films and TV shows scheduled to be released in 2023, set-jetting is not anticipated to go anywhere anytime soon.
In fact, travel experts from Planet Cruise recently predicted that rates of media-inspired travel would only continue to skyrocket over the next twelve months.
Planet Cruise also analyzed some of the most highly anticipated films and shows for the year ahead in order to predict what travel destinations will be the biggest hot spots in 2023. Spoiler alert: two prime spots are even located in the United States.
1. “Barbie” – Venice Beach, California
By now, you have definitely seen some behind-the-scenes footage of the new live-action “Barbie” movie being filmed in California.
The teasers were released on social media and revealed that Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling would be starring as the iconic Barbie and Ken.
And while it was hard for viewers to peel their eyes away from Margot and Ryan’s outfits– I mean, they were wearing retro neon biker shorts, roller skates, and elbow pads– many were still quick to figure out the set’s location. It was no other than Venice Beach in California.

So, if you could not have guessed, Venice Beach is expected to be the top set-jetting destination this year. In fact, the #VeniceBeach has already been viewed over one billion times on TikTok.
2. “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” – Scotland
Ever since the first “Indiana Jones” film debuted in 1981, the film franchise has had international audiences in a chokehold.
And this year, the franchise’s newest film– “The Dial of Destiny”– has brought one particular locale a huge boost of intrigue.
While the movie was shot in various locations, including Sicily and Northumberland, the most iconic set is in Scotland. It appears that fans ripe with anticipation agree, too, since Scotland has gained an impressive 537 million views on TikTok.
And if you want to hop on the bandwagon, visit St. Vincent Street in Glasgow. This block was featured in the “Dial of Destiny” trailer when it was lined with hundreds of American flags for the film’s plot line.
3. “The Marvels” – New Jersey
With so many filming locations, there are countless “The Marvels” sets that fans can jet off to. However, the most popular is undeniably in New Jersey.
Despite the set details for the latest film not being released yet, there are plenty of locations in New Jersey that served as sets within The Marvel Cinematic Universe.
For instance, when Stan Lee shouted, “Make love, not war!” in “Avengers: Endgame,” he was standing on a scenic New Jersey road. Likewise, Liberty State Park, Coles Academic High School, and Journal Square were all featured in different scenes of the TV series “Ms. Marvel”– which was released last summer.
So, with over 461 million views on TikTok already, you might want to make your way to New Jersey fast.
4. “You,” “Fast X,” “Aquaman,” And More – London
Do you love Joe Goldberg (played by Penn Badgley) from the TV series “You” even though he is a bit of a creep? Well, then you might want to pound the streets to London as soon as possible– because, as you probably remember from the end of season three, Joe actually moves to London to start fresh.
So, there has reportedly been a lot of filming for this hit series at Royal Holloway University, where viewers will get to watch the character take on yet another unsuspecting identity. Spoiler alert: he poses as a professor. Likewise, a lot of other productions are being filmed in U.K.’s capital– including major blockbusters like “Fast X,” “Aquaman,” and “Lost Kingdom.” On TikTok, the city has also garnered a whopping 388 million views.
5. “The Marvels” – Tropea, Italy
As we said, “The Marvels” has plenty of filming locations. But, while the film’s New Jersey set may have earned a higher set-jetting ranking, the movie’s set in Tropea, Italy, will still be a major hotspot.
This southern Italian village is just stunning. So, even if you are not a major Marvel fan, you cannot really go wrong with this vacation destination. Nonetheless, “The Marvels” did undergo shooting on location in Tropea from August 27 to September 3. Now, exactly where the film was shot in the village has not been released yet.
But perhaps the mystery is making Tropea all the more appealing to fans– since the village has gained over 272 million views on TikTok.
