Daisy Ridley might have gotten most of the rumor attention, but in the end, MGM and Warner Bros may have wanted someone who isn’t already occupying an iconic role. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Alicia Vikander will star as Lara Croft in the next run of Tomb Raider movies, which figure to be loosely based on the recently rebooted video game series that launched in 2013.
Vikander is perhaps best known for her role as the robot Ava in last year’s Ex Machina, and is also set to star in the next Jason Bourne movie along with Matt Damon. The new Tomb Raider movie will be directed by Roar Uthaug of The Wave. Vikander will star as a younger Lara Croft just beginning her tomb raiding days, the same approach the video game series took with the 2013 reboot of the franchise. That’ll be in contrast to the Angelina Jolie Tomb Raider movies from the previous decade, which, like the classic games, featured an older and more seasoned Lara.
Not much else is known about the upcoming film, or how closely it will hew to the 2013 game, if at all. We expect we’ll hear much more before too long.
