No fooling — April 1 just so happens to be the day Apple was brought into the world. Today is the 40th anniversary of the founding of Apple by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne, and the company is celebrating with an Apple-style skull and crossbones flying over the company’s Cupertino headquarters. It’s a safe bet the company isn’t hugely supportive of pirates these days, but that wasn’t always the case.

The Flag is a throwback to a 1983 meeting, at which Steve Jobs dished out one of the many pithy quotes he was known for — “It’s better to be a pirate than join the navy.” That guided company culture during the ’80s, and was part of what inspired the title Pirates of Silicon Valley, the ’90s biopic about Apple.
The story of the flag is preserved on Folklore.org, where you can read about how the team got Susan kare, the woman who designed the original Macintosh icons, to create the Apple pirate flag. The flag was eventually stolen and went missing permanently (an appropriate enough fate for a pirate flag), but it looks like it’s been revived. While the optics of flying the Jolly Roger aren’t as good in 2016 for Apple, it looks like the current powers that be figured today was a special enough occasion to let it fly.
