After many delays, Amazon Go opens to the public

Amazon Go, the company’s automated grocery Store, finally opened to the public this week. It’s been a long time coming — when Amazon announced the store in December of 2016, they planned to open it in spring of 2017. It is a hefty undertaking, after all — Amazon Go has no cashiers or checkout lines. Instead, customers log in to their Amazon accounts on an app, scan a barcode at the entrance turnstiles, then grab what they need and go. The store is outfitted with cameras, sensors, and software sophisticated enough to spot who has picked up what, with the store even able to tell when someone picks up an item, then puts it back on the shelf. Upon leaving, the total of the items you take out is charged to your Amazon account.

The store isn’t totally without employees. Amazon has greeters there to explain how the process works, along with ID checkers by the booze section. All the same, Amazon Go seems to be the model for a store without employees, and while Amazon will surely have some headaches to work through over the next year or two, we wouldn’t be surprised to see this sort of technology come to Whole Foods and non-Amazon stores alike.
