Let’s unpack that!

The supermoon part is the least rare. That simply refers to the moon being at one of its closest points to the Earth in its orbit — it’s when the moon shines super bright through your window and makes you lose sleep. It also happens to be a blue moon — a once in three years quirk of the calendar when two full moons appear in a single month. January 2 saw the first full moon of the month, with this heavily named moon just sneaking in at last moment.

Oh, and it’ll a full lunar eclipse, too. The Earth will pass right between the sun and the moon, casting a complete shadow over the moon in the early hours of the 31st. It’s a once-in-a-generation (if that) trifecta, so it’s well worth staying up for — if you happen to live in the right place!
