The holiday season is upon us, and that means lots of Family time in the near future. And it’s super cold out! That means lots of family time together, inside. Sometimes, that can be not so fun! Fortunately, the Board game game has been anything but cold lately. There’s been a steady stream of really fun new board games coming out in the new century, and a lot of them are short enough to let you play a few good rounds before moving onto something else. That beats one long bad game of Monopoly, known to be a top five contributor to bad family holiday times. Here’s what you should play instead!
Tired of Apples to Apples? Did Cards Against Humanity’s shock value finally wear off? Dixit is a similar kind of word association game, but with a visual twist. Instead of getting cards with words of a raunchy or un-raunchy nature, you get cards with gorgeous illustrations on them (just the artwork alone is almost worth the price). Each round, one player picks one of their cards, describes it with a mysterious word or phrase, and puts it face down. The other players each put down one of their cards that they think best matches that description, then the cards get shuffled and revealed.
Dixit is a really well-designed game. The person who gives the description wants people to guess their card, but they don’t want it to be too obvious — they get a point for each person who correctly picks their card, but if all the other players pick their card, they get no points. The other players get points by correctly picking the card of the person who gave the description. It’s a ton of fun, there are loads of expansion packs to keep the game fresh, it’ll help you to get to know your people better, and it’s one of those beautiful games that you can just stop playing whenever it’s time to go eat! Most games I’ve played have ended with no one caring who won, anyway.
