Been pining for more Stargate since the untimely end of Stargate Universe? Now’s your time — it’s coming back, although there might not be enough on the plate to satisfy your appetite.
MGM has begun production on a new Series called Stargate Origins, which will look at Catherine Langford (one of the main characters in the original movie) as she goes on her first Stargate adventures. The only problem for fans is that those adventures will be a bit brief.
In their announcement at San Diego Comic-Con this week, MGM revealed that the first season of the show will consist of 10 episodes of 10 minutes each. 10 minutes isn’t a whole lot, but that’s not necessarily bad — shorts can be pretty interesting in their own right. It’s not been confirmed when the series will be posted, but filming is supposed to start this fall.
MGM is handling this on their own, so instead of being on a network or a site like Netflix, the production company will be using its own site. They’ve created Stargate Command as a fan website that looks back on the franchise’s 25-year history, and at some point in the future, it’ll also host the new Stargate Origins episodes. It’s unlikely that they’ll charge given that these are 10-minute episodes, so we’re thinking it’ll end up being something akin to an old YouTube series (before the YouTube TV and Red subscriptions came around).
If we’re going to speculate, we’d guess this is a low-risk, low-budget attempt on MGM’s part to gauge interest in the Stargate franchise before putting down significant amounts of money on new movies or a full-sized new series. Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich, creators of the original movie, were kicking around ideas for a reboot trilogy of movies last year, but reportedly momentum died because of friction between what the studio wanted and what the creators wanted. Charitably, we could see this as MGM trying to see whether or not it’d be worth it to give Devlin and Emmerich carte blanche — it definitely smells like a test one way or the other, so if you’re bummed that 10 minutes isn’t going to be enough Stargate for you, you might want to go ahead and watch anyway.
