Want to have the full experience of being in a Jedi academy? Well, historically that hasn’t ended well for those students, but you do you. Lenovo and Disney have been working on bringing Jedi education into this galaxy, and they’re almost ready to introduce it to aspiring Padawans. At the D23 fan expo in Anaheim over the weekend, they teased a new set of augmented reality games called Star Wars: Jedi Challenges, and it’s going to involve lightsabers.
Despite saying that Jedi Challenges is coming soon, Lenovo and Disney didn’t have too much to say in the way of specifics. But, we can glean a few facts from the tease over the weekend. It looks like they’ll be producing an augmented reality headset just for the games — our guess is that it’ll be based on the mixed reality headsets that a handful of companies, including Lenovo, have made in partnership with Microsoft.
The new headset will also work with a number of accessories in development, one of which will be a lightsaber. We imagine that AR will provide the light part of the saber, making lightsaber training a real thing. Can you use Kylo Ren’s claymore? I don’t know, but I think that’s going to be for more advanced students.
Another AR game will teach you the valuable lesson of letting the wookiee win. They’ll be including the holochess game from the original Star Wars — the one Chewbacca has never lost.
For now, all we can do is check out the teaser video. If you’re sold, you can also sign up to receive more information from Lenovo and Disney as they make it available.
