Crossfades have been V-Moda’s iconic over-ear headphones and it wasn’t until last year that they released a wireless model. Going wireless was an instant win, delivering high fidelity freedom with a lot of comfort and a lot of battery. Now, the new Crossfade 2s deliver an even more impressive 14+ hour battery, even comfier cushions, new drivers, and best of all, CliqFold collapsibility for safe and easy traveling. Needless to say, they sound ridiculously incredible. They’re customizable too!
V-Moda is easily identified for its bold high-end design. The Crossfade 2s is no exception. It’s a beautiful feat of engineering with a build that’s as durable as it is comfortable. V-Moda built these to the military-grade specification MIL-STD-810G. It was no surprise to see these headphones crafted from a blend of premium materials. There’s very little plastic included. The band is wrapped in vegan leather and cushioned with a very comfortably plush underside. The earcups are also vegan leather and extremely cushiony. There’s almost an inch of cushion, which makes them comfortable enough to wear for hours. The vegan leather looks as good as the real thing. The hinges and internals of the headphones are a blend of steel and metal. On the outside of the earcups is V-Moda’s iconic metal shield, which is customizable and interchangeable. One of the big updates for this version of the Crossfades is the collapsibility with the new CliqFold design. Both arms of the headphones fold back into the headband, making them portable enough to fit into most jacket pockets.
Crossfade 2s come with an esoskeleton case, a rugged cable with inline ControlTalk, a USB to Micro-USB cable, and a 1/4″ gold plated adapter. With the case, it would be nearly impossible to damage the Crossfades from regular transportation. Even without the case, it’d be quite hard to damage them in regular transportation. It’s a really form fitting case. On the bottom of one earphone is a micro-USB port, and on the other earphone is the optional headphone port. When you’re wirelessly listening over bluetooth, you can use Crossfade’s built-in controls. The buttons are located near the top of your right headphone with controls for volume and a universal play/pause/skip/voice button. There’s a separate on/off/pair switch. Even though Crossfades feature a very bold and edgy design, the controls and ports were laid out very simplistically. It’s quite nice!
The wireless listening experience for V-Moda is a gamechanger.
The wireless listening experience for V-Moda is a gamechanger. And with a passive standard headphone port, you can listen to the Crossfades with or without batteries. The battery is 15% larger than the first model with an extremely impressive 14 hours of music. In practice, I find my self charging only every few weeks. In a pinch, I’ve found a 5 minute charge can get me through my morning commute. It takes 100 minutes for a full charge. I was a bit sad to learn that bluetooth won’t work while it’s charging, however the wired functionality will. The bluetooth range is up to 30 feet and I’ve found the connection to be well above average. I can move about my office without any cutouts. Additionally, there’s virtually zero latency, or delay, between the music device and the headphones. This makes them great headphones for watching movies, TV, or even playing VR.
There’s a microphone built into the headphones for when you’re connected to bluetooth. It works very well for taking calls and is honestly just as good as any wired microphone. If you’re using V-Moda’s included cable, it features a SpeakEasy inline microphone so you’re covered either way with voice capabilities. V-Moda’s cables are always the best. It’s a braided cable that is tangle-resistant. The cables are built to bend over a million times. The cable also has an easy-to-press universal button for skipping tracks, pausing, taking calls, or accessing voice commands.
