Giant Spider DIY

It’s the start of the holiday season and Halloween is quickly approaching. We put together this easy DIY spider that will make people turn their heads and only take you an hour too complete!

First and foremost, here is the shopping list:

  1. Product number one is cardboard. You only need about ¼ of what you see in the picture. (We used the cardboard from the Pop n’ Store box)
  2. A box. We used our Pop n’ Store Mega Box in black, which was perfect for this project (you will need a box that has a lid to keep the legs secure)
  3. Large googlie eyes! We found ours at Hobby Lobby in the Halloween area.
  4. Black pipe cleaners. In total you will need about 46 pieces – to be safe get the larger bag.
  5. Four (4) black foam, long pipe covers. We found ours at Home Depot and were really cheap!
  6. Other items you will need include: scissors, ruler, pen, tape (any kind will work you won’t see it) and a hot glue gun.

Step 1: You will cut each Pipe cover in half. (If you don’t want to eye ball the half way point get your ruler out and measure to 35inchs and mark a line with your marker)

Note: Each pipe cover makes 2 legs

Step 2: Once each pipe cover is cut in half you will then take each part and measure out 12 inchs.

Step 3: After you are done cutting each pipe cover you then will get your cardboard. Cut out 8 long pieces to connect the small part of the leg to the large part.

Step 4: Place a piece of cardboard between the small leg and the large leg.

Note: For a more secure leg add a bit of hot glue to the cardboard and stick to the inner part of the pipe cover.

Step 5: After you are done putting cardboard in each leg you then will cover the cardboard with the black pipe cleaner.

Note: We left the pipe cleaner loose around the cardboard and molded the pipe cleaner each time we added one. We used 4 total on each leg to create the coverage we were going for.

Step 6: Now you are ready to connect the legs to the box. Stick two pipe cleaners into the small part of the leg. Form the pipe cleaner to the box – give it enough room so that the lid will securely fit on.

Note: This does not have to be perfect! Each leg will be formed into position after a few more steps.

Then you will add a piece of tape to really secure each leg. We used painters tape because it has enough security with the ability to remove it easily without hurting the Pop n’ Store box.

Step 7: Add a large piece of painter’s tape to each eye to stick onto the Pop n’ Store box.

Then put the lid on to really secure those legs and you are done!

Note: Don’t worry about the placement of the legs until you get your spider to its final destination
