In today’s digital era, businesses have come to rely upon digital solutions and modern technology for their day to day operations. Many would struggle and operations could even grind to a halt without IT solutions and facilities.
However, while IT is more important than ever in today’s digital age, it seems that not all businesses have staff who are adequately trained when it comes to IT.
Most would agree that most office jobs these days involve the use of computers and IT to some degree. While those in office jobs are not expected to be IT experts, unless they are in an IT job of course, they do need to have some IT skills in order to perform their jobs properly.
However, according to recent research by UK training company STL, many feel they do not have the necessary training and knowledge in IT to do their jobs to the best of their abilities. This has highlighted a worrying IT skills gap among employees at many UK businesses.
Lack of Understanding and Training
Many employees find it very frustrating to be assigned a job that they cannot perform properly because of their lack of IT skills. This is not only bad for the morale of the employee but also in terms of productivity for the business. Without the right skills, employees take much longer to get jobs completed and there is always the chance that they will do the job incorrectly as a result of not having the necessary skills.
While businesses have been investing a lot of time and money in IT training for staff over recent years, sometimes employees are given jobs that are considered pretty basic but for which they do not have relevant training.
This includes tasks such as efficiently and effectively using MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for everyday tasks. Many employers assume that their employees will have some level of experience using these basics, but often, they have not had much experience with them and have to guess their way around. This is where measures such as even basic training could prove invaluable.
The research found that more than one third of 2,000 office workers that were polled believed that they were being held back from doing their job properly due to lack of training and IT skills. Around half of office workers in the UK said that they did not have a full understanding of programs that are considered pretty basic such as Excel and Word. Spreadsheets and presentations have also been highlighted as problem areas.
The survey also found that, on average, workers are spending more than ten hours each month trying to work out their IT systems due to lack of skills and knowledge. For companies that employ a lot of staff, this equates to a huge number of hours each month that are essentially being wasted.
It would be far more cost-effective for these businesses to ensure all staff are adequately trained than to continue losing this amount of time every month while staff members struggle to perform their tasks properly.
