One of the most important things we need to face as Business owners is that we aren’t perfect. No matter how much we want to be, we aren’t. And, to top it off, business doesn’t always go the way we want it to, and we might make a mistake or two along the way. I know … tell me it isn’t so! But it is.
There may be times in business when you really don’t want to own up to something that might not put you in the best light with a client or colleague. Or you don’t want to admit something that may make you look less than the success you want others to see. But no matter how much you don’t want others to see the “real you” in that particular moment or under those particular circumstances, deceitfulness and guile have no place in business. Admit it. You’ve been there at one time or another. It would be soooo easy to blame that mistake on someone else. It would be even easier to be less than truthful by saying you never received an email with instructions to do something you flat out forgot to do, but didn’t want to admit to your client or colleague that you may have screwed up. We’ve all had those moments when we might be tempted to lie about something rather than tell the truth. Don’t let that temptation give birth!
No matter how tempted you are to even slightly stretch the truth, it’s still a lie. Honesty and truthfulness should always prevail. Never, ever lie. Deceitfulness and guile have no place in business.
When faced with unpleasant situations in business (and in your personal life), honesty can be very uncomfortable at times, however …
Honesty IS, and always will be, the best policy in every situation.
