With summer making its presence known and since it is becoming clear that people will spend most of their time at home for the next few months, Outdoor Furniture Sales have seen a significant increase.

The Reasons

It makes logical sense that sales of Outdoor furniture are spiking. After all, the current world situation means that people are staying at home with a few instances of vacations on the horizon. People know that they will be spending more time in their homes and want to make the most of it.

The Overstock.com chief sourcing and operations officer, Ron Hilton, explained the spike. He said that people have noticed that as they spend more time in their homes, it becomes more important to have beneficial, meaningful things.

People are also searching for entertainment, hence the purchase of playground sets for families or above-ground pools. They want ways to spend their time at home, including as a family.

What Items Are Being Sold?

Home goods and furniture retailers have reported significant spikes in Outdoor Furniture sales, along with related outdoor accessories. This includes gardening items, pools, grills, and fire pits. Also, high-priced items such as above-ground pools, hot tubs, trampolines, and playground sets have seen an increase.

There has also been an increase in sales of items that are designed to work in compact spaces. Hilton offered the example of small outdoor café sets that would fit on the balcony of a small apartment.

Bed Bath & Beyond has also seen an increase in sales of outdoor furniture, along with related accessories such as gardening, outdoor lighting, and cooking. This retailer has seen the most growth in the categories of outdoor pillows and cushions, outdoor growth, outdoor lighting, outdoor rugs, gardening items, and grilling tools. Beach chairs, floats, and blow-up pools have also been popular.

Frontgate has also seen an increased demand for organizational items as well as outdoor storage, umbrellas, chaises, fire pits, and pool floats.

The Sales Increase

The increase in sales of outdoor furniture first began in March, but at that point, it was just an uptick. Hilton now says that the demand has “exploded.” According to Hilton, the spike in demand is more than the typical seasonal increase. Additionally, there was a notable boost when the government sent out the first stimulus checks.

Retailers are adapting to changing demands and the increase in outdoor furniture sales. Frontgate, for example, has tried to focus its marketing on items that make outdoor areas seem like living spaces, instead of those focused on gatherings.
