A Scania vehicle with Marcopolo-built bodywork is the first compressed natural gas (CNG) articulated bus operating in the City of Monterrey, Mexico. The 18-metre Scania bus, fitted with a Euro 6 engine generating 320 horsepower, is being demonstrated by Scania Mexico.

At the BusWorld fair in Colombia late last year, Guillermo Hughes, Sales Engineering Manager at Scania in Argentina, explained: “The new line of Scania gas engines has two very important technical advantages, the first being that it is ready to work at altitude, making it an excellent choice for many cities on the continent. The second is that it has great tolerance to variations in fuel specification, which is why it can work with different grades of natural gas without requiring adjustments in the engine.”

Euro 6 technology translates into a lower level of C02 emissions, as does operating with natural gas. Furthermore, CNG fueled buses have proven to be very economical; both characteristics making it an excellent alternative to be implemented in public transport systems with high passenger flow.

Prior to the test, Jorge Longoria, head of the Transportation and Road Agency of the state of Nuevo León, of which Monterrey is the capital city, said that these types of buses are ideal for the metropolitan area of ​​the state. Being natural gas, they will be considerably less polluting and less noisy.

The 18 metre bus, built on a Scania K320 chassis, has capacity to carry up to 180 passengers.
