Why Are My Taillights and Headlights Flickering?

Tags:

The alternator is going bad if your vehicle’s lights are flickering. The lights may also be too bright if the alternator is malfunctioning and producing too much electricity or too dim if the alternator cannot produce enough electricity. Aside from the light problems, HCS Auto Repair is going to list the other signs of a malfunctioning alternator below.

An Overheated Electrical System

Your car’s electrical system can overheat if the faulty alternator is producing too much electricity. The maximum voltage the alternator should produce is 14.5 volts. If it produces more than this, it will overheat the electrical system and you will smell burning wires and rubber in the engine.

Difficult Starts/Dead Battery

A dying alternator can also make it difficult to start your automobile because the battery will discharge. The alternator is responsible for keeping the battery charged at all times. If the alternator has gone bad, which can happen after 10 years, there will come a point when it will stop charging the battery.

Frequent Engine Stalling

The alternator is also responsible for powering the spark plugs so they generate sparks when it is time for them to fire. If your engine has started misfiring and stalling frequently, this can be a sign that the alternator needs to be replaced. It can also be a sign that you need new spark plugs.

Growling or Squealing Noises

You may hear growling or squealing noises coming from your engine if the alternator is malfunctioning. The alternator itself will make growling or grinding sounds if its internal mechanisms are worn out. The alternator belt can make squealing or whining sounds if it is worn out or too loose.

Illuminated Battery Warning Light

Your car’s dashboard may also let you know that the alternator is going bad. It may turn on the battery light if the alternator sends an error code to the engine control module. Some vehicles are equipped with an ALT or GEN light. The module may turn on these lights instead of the battery light.

Malfunctioning or Slow Accessories

Finally, if you notice a difference in how your automobile’s power accessories are performing, you may have a problem with the alternator. For example, your power seats may slow down when you try to adjust them or your car radio may turn off on its own.
