4 Tips for Staying Safe in a Large Crowd

4 Tips for Staying Safe in a Large Crowd

As more and more municipalities across the country are opening to public and private events, there are more concerns now than ever before about safety in large crowds. Trade shows, conventions, weddings and other private events must take security seriously. Large numbers of people in one space can leave event operators open to liability.

As we approach the holiday season, where events like parades, busy shopping days and holiday parties will begin to take place, it is important for both event attendees and operators to understand their possible threats and have plans in place to address them. Being prepared before an incident occurs is key to keeping people and property safe.

If you are an event operator, security should be one of your primary concerns during the planning process. Theft and violence are two common security threats; however, there are many issues that could arise that can put your attendees in harm's way. It is critical that you create a robust security plan with the help of a reputable security company. Security guards are one of your best safeguards from any kind of security concern you may have.

  • Theft
  • Vandalism
  • Violent attacks
  • Active shooter events
  • Unauthorized access
  • Terrorism
  • Unruly crowds
  • Emergency evacuation

4 Tips for Staying Safe in a Large Crowd

The energy of a large crowd at an event such as a music concert, sporting event or convention can be electrifying. But large crowds can also pose serious dangers. As an attendee at one of these events, it is in your best interest to be prepared by asking yourself certain questions before attending the event. Not only can this preparation keep you safe, but it can help protect others in the event of an emergency.

Make sure your smartphone is fully charged.

At a large event, chances are you are using your smartphone to take pictures and communicate with others. You may be using more battery than normal. If an emergency does occur, you don't want to be left with a dead phone. Be sure to leave the house with a fully charged phone. If possible, bring a phone charger that you can plug in at the venue if needed.

Have an alternate communication plan.

What if your phone does die or what if you don't have service at the event? How will you communicate with others or emergency personnel? There are apps available that can transform your phone into a walkie talkie that can work without cell service. Consider turning your phone off when not in use or avoid using it unless absolutely necessary to conserve battery life.

Create a plan.

If there was an emergency at an event like an active shooter, do you know what you would do? Have a plan put in place before you get to the venue. Have an understanding of where the exits are located. If you are with a group, come up with a meeting point in the event that you are unable to call each other or become separated.

Dress thoughtfully.

While certain music festivals are more like fashion events than music events, keep in mind your clothing choices if an emergency were to occur. Wearing layers can be key if you are stuck in a hot or cold venue. If an emergency evacuation or escape is required, are you wearing shoes that you could run in?

While most large events go off without serious security situations, you must be prepared. Preparation will help you remain calm in the event of an emergency.

These four tips can help you stay safe in a large crowd, but there are so many things you can do to protect yourself and others. Every event is different, so your approach will change depending on the venue and the nature of the event.
