The Da Vinci Code Author’s Ex-Wife Claims He Led a Lascivious Double Life

The Da Vinci Code’s author, Dan Brown, who is known for writing about conspiracies and secret societies, is being sued by his ex-wife, Blythe Brown, in a lawsuit that alleges he led a lascivious double life during their marriage and that he had many affairs, including a romantic liaison with a Dutch horse trainer.

The lawsuit Ms. Brown filed in New Hampshire on Monday (6/29/20) claims that she is credited for inspiring much of Mr. Brown’s successful works, including coming up with the premise for The Da Vinci Code. She alleges that Mr. Brown concealed future projects from her while they were married that are worth “millions” of dollars. These projects include a children’s book that is due out September and a television series.

Ms. Brown says that she only learned about her now ex-husband’s “unlawful and egregious” behavior and his extramarital affairs after they divorced, after 21 years of marriage in 2019. She is now accusing him of hiding funds from her in order to pay for expensive gifts for his unnamed lover that included several Friesian horses and financing for her horse training business.

The lawsuit states that “Dan has lived a proverbial life of lies for at least the past six years, seeming to be the epitome of a world-famous novelist leading a simple life in his home state of New Hampshire, while in reality he was something quite different.” It goes on to claim that “For years, Dan has secretly moved substantial funds from his and Blythe’s hard-earned marital assets to conduct sordid, extra-marital affairs with women – one half his age – and to pursue a clandestine life.”

In a statement, Dan Brown said he was “stunned” by his ex-wife’s allegations and never misled her during their divorce- and that she ended up with half of their holdings when they divorced.

During a high profile trial in London in 2006, two authors unsuccessfully sued the publisher of The Da Vinci Code for appropriating the “architecture” of their book. During this trial, witnesses made statements and court testimony indicated that Blythe Brown did, in fact, lead a massive research effort for the book, as well that she provided volumes of notes and suggestions to her (then) husband and offered a “female perspective” for the book that was imperative to its continuity.

Blythe Brown seeks unspecified damages in her lawsuit.
