Passport name change process or Passport name correction process can be tricky. Name change in passport can be because of name change or surname change . It can also be  passport name change after marriage. In this article we will explain procedure to change name in passport and documents required for change of name in passport.

Reasons to Change your Name in Passport

There are many reasons to change name in passport. They are—

Documents Required for Change of Name in Passport

The documents required for changing your name in the passport varies on the reason. After that the procedure is more or less same for every case. I am mentioning the documents below for each case.

Required Documents to Change Name in Passport After Marriage

Women who want to change their Name/Surname or Both in their Passport after Marriage are needed to show the following documents along with Passport Application when they visit the Passport office at the time of Appointment:

  • Photocopy of the Passport of  Husband (If available).
  • Self-Attested Photocopy of the Marriage Certificate. (* the marriage certificate should be issued by Registrar or Marriage office or it should contain a Joint Affidavit of Husband and Wife with Joint Photograph on a Non-Judicial Stamp Paper (Annexure ‘D’).
Required Documents to Change Name in Passport After Divorce

Women who want to change their Name/Surname or any person who want to remove their Surname of their Spouse in Passport after a divorce need to show the following documents along with Passport Application in the passport office at the time of Appointment :

  • Certified copy of Divorce decree.
  • Deed poll/Sworn Affidavit by a Notary on a Stamp Paper (Non-Judicial) of minimum value (ANNEXURE ‘E’).
Required Documents to Change Name in Passport After Re-Marriage

Women who want to change their Name/Surname in Passport in case of Re-Marriage have to show the following documents along with Passport Application when they visit the Passport office at the time of Appointment:

  • Divorce proof with respect to husband or Death Certificate of Husband.
  • Photocopy of the Passport of  Husband (If available).
  • Self-Attested Photocopy of the Marriage Certificate. (* the marriage certificate should be issued by Registrar or Marriage office or it should contain a Joint Affidavit of Husband and Wife with Joint Photograph on a Non-Judicial Stamp Paper (Annexure ‘D’).
Required Documents to Change Name in Passport for All Other Circumstances

All other Applicants changing their Name/Surname or Both in Passport for any other Reasons/Circumstances must present the following documents with their Passport Application at the time of Appointment :

  • Deed poll/Sworn Affidavit by a Notary on a Stamp Paper (Non-Judicial) of minimum value (ANNEXURE ‘E’).
  • Newspaper Advertisement in any two daily leading newspapers (must be published in your city or town) regarding your change of name.

Procedure to Change Name in Passport

The procedure for changing your name in passport is similar applying for passport for the first time. Its quite easy, just follow these steps.

  • First, go to the official passport seva website by clicking the below link Passport Seva Home | Indian Passport | Passport | Passport Seva Project (passportindia.gov.in)
  • Now if you are already a registered user, log in using your valid credentials. If you are new to this, you have to click new user registration and create an account.
  • After logging in you will see a list of services. Choose ‘Apply for fresh passport/reissue of passport’

  • In the next page, chose alternative 1 to apply online. Chose alternative 2 if you want to apply offline.

  • In the next page, choose reissue of passport’ and select which details you want to change by checking the respective boxes. Then click next.

  • Now you have to fill some details, then check the box “yes” to agree with the terms and conditions, click save my details and then click next.

  • After that you have to enter your family details, current address details, previous passport details and emergency contact number.

  • Next, you have to verify some details in either yes or no. after completion save your details and click next.

  • Next, you will be shown a preview of the details you have entered. Check them and click next.

  • You have to choose document as proof date of birth and current residency. You can choose Aadhaar card in both the cases if you want.

  • Now you will see a preview of your application. Print it and click next.

  • After that you have to complete the payment procedure by clicking pay online. After successful payment print the receipt and click next.

  • In the next page you will have to choose an appointment. Click next and you will see a list of appointments available.

  • Book an appointment date in the next page. The green colored dates are available.

  • Now you have to upload documents. Scan the documents and upload it. Click the upload button.

  • After that the final receipt of your application will be shown. Print it and click close. The online application procedure is finished.

Now you have be present at the passport office at the day of the appointment with all the documents mentioned above (according to your reason for changing name) and that’s all. Just wait and your reissued passport with updated details will be sent to you to your address by mail.

Required time to complete the procedure to change name in passport

The process is similar to the applying for fresh passport and the time taken is also similar.it usually takes around 3 weeks to 1 month but it can vary based on other situations. Also, you have to pay a standard 1500 Rupees fees for reissuing your passport.
