Remember, there are Several Roads to Success

One lesson that I have learnt after coming into contact with so many successful dietitians is that there is no single path to getting to your destination of career fulfillment. The truth of the matter is that some people will land their first dietitian job much faster than others because they were at the right place at the right time. For instance, if you were to knock on a dietitian recruiter’s door at a time when a request has just been placed for a dietitian, then you just might be in for a smooth landing. The best practice is to try and use different channels and openings: Such as applying aggressively WITH a cover letter, and reaching out directly to recruiters. Either one of these approaches are smart, and will be sure to give you an advantage over the competition.

Accept a temporary position
Although security is an important factor in any job, it is beneficial to consider a compromise in some cases. You have probably come across several job opportunities requiring a minimum period of experience such as 3 or more years. This can be quite discouraging for a new grad. Accepting a temporary dietitian job such as covering for someone on medical leave or on vacation, gives you on-the-job training which is extremely valuable.  This experience no matter how brief,  will come in handy when another lucrative job offer comes knocking. Temporary positions can be advertised through emails, job boards, and most commonly word of mouth. It is important to develop great professional relationships with your preceptors during your internships as they may shortlist you for temporary dietitian jobs, when the opportunity comes knocking.

Work with a Mentor
Having another senior dietitian as a mentor gives you added support as you begin to navigate your career path.  Start thinking about a mentor as early as possible. Ideally, you should try to shadow someone who has had success in the field of nutrition you intend to concentrate in. Having a senior dietitian as a mentor also works in your favor during the dietitian job search as they can be used as professional references.

Consider Job Opportunities in Rural Settings
One thing you should note is that metropolitan areas are much more competitive and recruiters will always go for the more experienced dietitians. In a rural setting, recruiters are willing to work with a fresh graduate due to the greater dietitian job need, and limited number of applicants. Taking on this role in no time will mean that you will be able to advance quickly in your dietitian career as you will be seen as a valuable asset. You are also more likely to experience a strong sense of community in this setting.

Identify and Accept your Limitations
You will come across job openings that require a lot more experience than you have. Do not let that deter you from applying either way. You will be surprised that you may get the job on other factors such as your education level,  level of  training, and simply because you are aware of and acknowledge your limitations.
