On Tuesday, November 12, 2019 it’s expected that a new version of Wordpress – 5.3 – will be rolled out to every WP site around the web.
This will be the 3rd and final major release of the year. (All 2 Digit Releases are major releases containing new features. Three digit releases are bug fixes and security patches and have no new features.)
As you might expect there are lots of much needed improvements in the Gutenberg block editor. This is just a partial list and what I feature in my video:
- image block
- button block
- column block
- table block
But the bigger news is that 5.3 introduces the group block which allows for the grouping of multiple blocks into one block so that you can add a common background. That’s not much right now but it’s a start as the group block will play an important role in Gutenberg’s future.
Aside from Gutenberg there are other enhancements, notably a login screen which asks that you check your admin email address before you login. This is also something ant WordPress will build upon in future releases.
Most web hosts will not automatically update your site to 5.3 because this is a major update. This means you will have to do the update yourself when you login to your WP Admin. Make sure you have a current backup of your site before you update.
