For many consumers, Meal kits tend to lose their appeal after factoring the product’s limited shelf life and cost, but a company says they’ve found a way to tackle at least one of those issues.
True Food Innovations (TFI), a consumer packaged goods and manufacturing company that specializes in turnkey food items, has launched a new product that will help retailers combat the issue of limited shelf life when it comes to the distribution of prepared meals across the US.
The products are branded after Chef’d meal packaging under the name True Chef and Chef’d, a meal kit company that True Food Innovations obtained the assets to last July.

When it comes to prepared meals, shelf-life is a rising challenge that affects products to be commercially viable to a nationwide market, and many food retailers struggle with this issue in the industry.
In order to find a solution, TFI’s team of food science researchers and developers have created a franchise of Meal Kits that withstand a 55-day shelf life.
The meal kits are the first of its kind in the food market and are made up of ingredients that are preservative and artificial free, with recipes that require 15-20 minutes of prep and cook time.
According to the company officials, True Chef and Chef’d meal kits withstand their long-term shelf life through a natural food processing technique that utilizes patent-pending formulations and high-pressure processing, both FDA and USDA approved.
“Our strategy is to provide retailers with a multi-brand offering with the ability to provide meal kit options based on price, demographics, and geography; we have cracked the code that has limited large-scale retail rollouts of fresh meal kits,” said Robert Jones, President of True Food Innovations.
The True Chef meal kits will be rolling out nationwide to food retailers in 2019, creating a win-win operation that meets consumers demands though clean labeling, and grocers demand through long-term sustainable shelf life.
In the meantime, the food industry will have to wait and see whether this food processing technique can be used as a “one size fits all solution” for other meal-kit manufacturers interested in extending product shelf-life.
