Punjabi wedding rituals and their significance

Believe it or not, Punjabi Weddings are the most amazing Indian Wedding that any person would want to witness. Not only are the Punjabi weddings highly elaborated, but they also include some beautiful wedding rituals and ceremonies which are one of a kind. These ceremonies not only add cultural importance to the wedding but also make sure that both the guests as well as the host enjoy the same.

Want to know some of the most popular Punjabi Wedding Rituals and their significance? Below given are a few of them:

  • Chuda:

Chuda ceremony takes place in the morning and involves a puja. Under this ceremony, a set of red and cream ivory bangles are touched and blessed by all who are present in the ceremony. These are then put on the bride by the eldest maternal uncle. Once worn, all the relatives, friends, and cousins of the bride tie kaliras on her wrists.

  • Vatna:

Vatna ceremony is the Haldi ceremony during the Punjabi weddings wherein Haldi or vatna made of turmeric and mustard is applied to the body of the bride. This paste acts like a scrub which makes the bride look more beautiful during her wedding day.

  • Seherabandi:

This ritual has significance for the groom. A puja is performed at the house of the groom after which all the elderly relatives and the father of the groom shower their love and wishes to the groom by tying a sehra around his head. The sehra is usually pink in color and comes with strings which fall and cover the groom’s face.

  • Pani vaarna:

This ceremony is performed when the newly married couple reaches the house of the groom. The mother of the groom performs an aarti using a pitcher of water. With every round of aarti, she drinks the water from the pitcher and the groom is expected to stop her each time, permitting her to drink only the seventh time. The bride then pushes over a rice pot with her right foot before entering her new house to bring in happiness and good fortune.

Punjabi weddings are so much fun and must be witnessed at least once in a lifetime.
