How Much Will a Speeding Ticket Raise My Car Insurance?

You likely already know that being issued a Speeding Ticket in Georgia will cause your motor Vehicle Insurance Rates to rise. But how much higher will they be and what factors influence the cost? Here’s what you need to know.

Why Does Getting a Speeding Ticket Raise My Insurance?

Motor vehicle insurance rates are calculated based on a person’s risk factors. The higher the company deems your risk, the higher your rates are going to be. A person with a ten-year, accident-free driving history is likely to be quoted much lower rates than a person with a one-year driving history, a speeding ticket, and a fender bender on their record.

Factors That Determine How Much More You’ll Have to Pay

How much more you have to pay to your insurance company every month, quarter, or year after getting ticketed for speeding depends on a number of different factors. This includes but not limited to:

  • How fast you were going
  • What the posted speed limit was
  • Where you were speeding (e.g., in a school zone or on a county road)
  • If you were drinking and driving
  • If reckless driving was a factor

Essentially, the more dangerous the situation when you were pulled over for speeding, the greater your insurance rates will increase.

Rates by the Numbers

According to CarInsurance.com, Georgia’s motor vehicle insurance rates increase by a substantial amount after a person is issued a speeding ticket:

  • 17% rate increase for drivers going 11 to 16 mph over the posted speed limit
  • 27% rate increase for drivers going 17 to 29 mph over the posted speed limit
  • 59% rate increase for drivers going 30+ mph over the posted speed limit

Insurance.com reports that in Georgia, the average yearly cost for full coverage car insurance is $1865.00. For example, if a person were pulled over while driving 77 mph on an empty highway with a speed limit of 60 mph, the annual cost of insurance would skyrocket to $2182.05, or $317.05 more.
