For anyone at university: if you haven’t secured a Placement yet or are unsure about to do – please read.
I strongly believe taking a year out of your 3 year university course to do a 1 year placement is a complete waste of time. Why? Because (1) you still pay fees (2) it breaks momentum and (3) it isn’t going to give you enough of an advantage over other grads. UNLESS your Industry requires it.
Most people I know that have done Placements, still ended up starting at the same level as their peers, who did not. Furthermore, the 1 year you take out will give you some working world experience, but it will not be enough to get a real insight into the industry you are working in. Not enough value to delay graduating by 1 year, in my opinion.
Also, you are stuck in this 1 company for the whole year, which would be a disaster if you didn’t like the company/industry/role you were in because you can’t just leave and find another job [usually]. As an undergrad, you might not be trusted enough to take on lots of responsibility and you may not feel motivated enough to come back & smash out 3rd year.
You are likely to be considered the same as someone who has spent their summers doing 3 month internships. The internship work experience adds up to roughly the same amount as placement, but you can experience different companies, roles and teams and make an informed decision about what you like/don’t like.
All this changes if you know 100% what you want to do and you’re certain your placement will give you an edge over everyone else due to the company’s great reputation in your chosen field. Or if your industry is so competitive that internships just won’t cut it.
Of course, it is your choice at the end of the day but PLEASE remember, universities want you to do placements because it’s more money for them, and it also helps their reputation. If you don’t think it a placement is needed in your field, it probably isn’t.
Sign up to Udemy, learn things, work as a freelancer at uni or work as an intern in the summer. You can literally leave uni with no placement, a 2:1 degree and still get a better, higher paid job than someone with a placement and a first class degree.
You just need to know how.
If you just don’t want to leave uni and start working yet because it’s all going too fast for you try working all summer, save up and go travelling (or work abroad) to get the experience.
Transferrable skills + personality + life experience > work experience.
