Changing job but career trajectory falling behind

I started out at the same company at the same time as a friend. I was Promoted around 6 months earlier than said friend. Friend left the company after a year for a higher level position at another and has worked there for 6 months.

I’m applying to that company now and am only being considered for opportunities at my friend’s same level. The jump to the next level requires around another year of experience. If I join the company at that level, my friend is already 6 months ahead.

If I accept the offer, am I doing myself a disservice even though it is a better company and better pay? Even though I’m ahead of my peers in current company, by being promoted 6 months - 1 year earlier than them, in new company I will now be lagging behind my peer (or not behind, but I will lose any “ahead” that I already have).

Should I wait another year and reapply to the level above where I’m being considered? How do you time the job change right such that it doesn’t put you behind like it might to me in this case?
