Six soldiers killed after ambush by Communist rebels in Samar province

Six soldiers have been killed while six others were wounded in an ambush allegedly staged by Communist Rebels in Samar province.

Lieutenant Karen Cadano, assistant civil-military operations officer of the 46th Infantry Battalion, said the government troops were conducting a “community support programme” near Calbiga town at about 2am today (Tuesday, April 23) when the New People’s Army (NPA) Rebels threw improvised explosive devices at them before opening fire.

Speaking to The Inquirer, Lt. Cadano said that the soldiers, led by Sergeant Gilbert Benito, were able to counterattack and had wounded some of the rebels. It is believed that about 20 NPA fighters were involved in the ambush.

“At this time our troops are still extracting the bodies of those who died and the wounded at the area so we cannot give further details,” she said.

The following were killed in action:

  • Corporal Edgar Abing
  • Private First Class (PFC) Arthur Garcia
  • PFC Rufino Paster
  • PFC Danilo Constantino
  • Private Elbin Lagrimas
  • Corporal Junerembran Mamalo

Among those wounded were:

  • Sergeant Gilbert Benito
  • PFC Darwin Magoncia
  • PFC Mark Kevin Frigullana
  • Corporal Raymark Vigilla
  • PFC Joseph Salonga
  • Private Rex Espanol

Further clashes in North Cotabato

Meanwhile, two soldiers belonging to the 19th Infantry Battalion were wounded following an encounter with communist rebels in North Cotabato this morning.

Police Captain Jose Marie Molina, said the clashes resulted to displacement of more than a thousand residents living in the affected areas.

They are now temporarily seeking refuge in the village hall of Barangay Badiangon in Arakan town.

The wounded soldiers were airlifted from the battle site for medical treatment.

Sporadic gun has continued to be heard in the area as the army pursues the rebels positioned in the mountainous areas of Arakan town.
