A magnitude 3.6 aftershock hit Davao Oriental after a magnitude 6.4 quake jolted Southern Mindanao, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said.

Phivolcs said the aftershock happened at 5.18pm today (Saturday, September 8), with its epicentre at 16km southeast of Manay city, with a depth of 13km.

A much stronger quake of tectonic origin struck the region about two hours earlier at 3.16pm. Its epicenter was 14km northeast of Manay at a depth of 28km.

Phivolcs said no serious damage had so far been reported, although some areas, including the town of Baganga and the city of Mati, lost power.

However, there was widespread panic, with malls, schools and colleges being evacuated even as far away as Davao City, with is 250km west of the epicentre.

The Davao City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council started conducting an assessment for possible damage to buildings and other structures, according to Rodrigo Bustillo, city disaster action officer.

A landslide has been reported in an upland village in Manay.

The 6.4 quake was also felt in Davao del Norte, Compostela Valley and Davao del Sur provinces.

Phivolcs recorded the following intensities in these areas:

  • Intensity IV – Koronadal City; Bislig City
  • Intensity III – Tupi, South Cotabato; Alabel, and Malapatan, Sarangani
  • Intensity II – Cotabato City; Gen. Santos City

In a situation report sent out to the media at 6.15pm today, the Department of Transportation said there had been no reports of damage in both the Davao Sea Port and the Davao Airport, including the runway.

No injuries or casualties were also reported in the airport, where normal operations continue.

The last major quake on Mindanao was recorded on August 19, when a magnitude five earthquake was felt across Compostela Valley province.
