Many times, your situations causes you to move. It can be a move for a new career change or relocation, purchasing a new home, getting married, attending college, and etc. With your situation shifting you to move, this is a huge impact on your pets. Moving can be a stressful time for you and your pets. Here are some helpful tips on pre-planning your transition for your pet.

Try To Stick to your Everyday Routine When Moving With Your Pet

Your regular routines will normally be disrupted as you plan for your move. It is important to minimize the disruption from your pet’s regular routine to avoid issues along the road. Make sure to keep your pet’s regular schedule for feeding time, playtime, and exercising time.

Keeping Your Pet Occupied During Your Move

When selling your home, there will be many strangers coming in and out; like realtors, buyers, inspectors, and etc. Make arrangements on keeping your pet occupied during these times. Your pet can stay in a familiar crate or kennel, so this will allow him/her to feel at ease when there are newcomers in the house. Or you can have one of your family member watch your pet at their place.

Preparing For a Comfortable Moving Experience For Dogs

  • Make a list of items that is needed for your pet travel. This is known as your “pet travel kit;” like bringing treats, food, water, collapsible dishes, toys, and etc that will ease your pet on their relocation.
  • If your pet is not use to traveling in a car, practice on taking him/her on a short trip around the neighborhood.
  • Prepare a “clean up kit” just in case if he/she have motion sickness while traveling.
  • You might want to contact your vet for tranquilizers to relax your pet on to his/her relocation.
  • Make sure to allow your pet to get water and bathroom breaks.

  • Bring your bird’s regular food and water. A change of food can cause sickness.
  • Pack fruits and vegetables in a good quality cooler. This will help your bird to keep dry and hydrated. Avoid giving water in the car.
  • Make sure the temperature is not overwhelming for your bird. Birds are sensitive to temperature, so make sure to check your car’s heating and air conditioning is working correctly. During hotter seasons, you can purchase glare guards to alleviate the heat for your bird.
  • Put your bird in the back seat with their carriers belted in. Avoid putting your bird in the front, especially if there are airbags that are inoperative.
  • Make sure to plan your trip carefully, by making reservations with hotels or motels that allow pets.

Preparing For a Comfortable Moving Experience For Reptiles

  • Bring your reptile for a vet check.
  • Get your reptile to be familiar to the travel crate or box with plenty of room to move around, but not too large.
  • Do not have any items in the crate or box with your reptile, while traveling. This will avoid harming your reptile.
  • Keep a constant temperature for your reptile’s habitat. Reptiles do not have control to regulate their own body temperature.
  • Continue the same routine, this will allow your reptile to be calm and relaxed.
  • Venomous reptiles should packed in 2 boxes and non-venomous reptiles can be pack in 1 box. Make sure there are plenty of air holes, on your boxes, for ventilation.
  • Keep moist towels in the box if your reptile needs a moist environment. This will prevent dehydration.
  • Bring extra food and water, just in case if there are unforeseen circumstances.
