Student in STC’s Interpreter Training Program passed away Dec. 2016

MCALLEN, TX (Dec. 13, 2017) – Almost a year to the day that Bianca Sarmiento lost her life to brain cancer on Dec. 17, 2016, South Texas College will posthumously award her degree to surviving family members during December Commencement Ceremonies on Saturday Dec. 16.

Sarmiento was diagnosed with Glioblastoma in 2016, and eventually succumbed to the disease at age 24 surrounded by her friends and family.

STC President Dr. Shirley A. Reed will bestow the degree to family during the afternoon commencement at 1 p.m.

“Bianca was highly recognized for her positive attitude and her sheer determination to begin helping people in the deaf community,” said Dr. Reed. “Staff and faculty are proud of her achievements, and even though she can’t celebrate with us, this recognizes her place forever within our STC family.”

South Texas College will confer more than 2,700 degrees during its December Commencement Ceremonies on Saturday Dec. 16.

Graduation will take place at the State Farm Arena. The ceremony for Bachelor’s Programs, Business and Technology, and Nursing and Allied Health degrees will take place at 9 a.m. The afternoon commencement for Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, and Mathematics and Science will take place at 1 p.m.

Graduating students are advised to pick up their cap and gown in Building K 2.402 at STC’s Pecan Campus. A picture ID will be required. Honor cords will be distributed when a student picks up their cap and gown.

Friends and families who plan on attending commencement ceremonies are encouraged to arrive at the State Farm Arena as early as possible in order to secure seating. Tickets have been issued to graduates and will be collected before entering.
