6 Tips for Small Apartments Storage

Living in an Apartment can come with all kinds of challenges, but perhaps one of the most difficult issues is finding a sufficient amount of storage space. If you’re someone who has a lot of stuff (god forbid you’re a hoarder), you’re sure to be facing a significant hurdle. These space issues only become amplified when you’re downsizing to a smaller apartment. But with a bit of organization, planning, and creativity, you can certainly find a way to store away all your possessions.

Here are six helpful tips for storing your items in a small apartment.

1. Install shelves

Installing shelves onto the walls of an apartment can often be tricky, especially if your property manager or landlord doesn’t allow large nails to be driven into the wall. Fortunately, there are several different shelving units available at home decor stores like Pier 1 Imports and Crate and Barrel that use various industrial-strength adhesives so you don’t have to use any nails or screws.

2. Install wall hung storage devices

Taking an open storage approach is a great alternative to simply storing items in storage containers. Wall hung storage devices create a functional yet decorative storage aesthetic to reduce the visual impact of storage containers. When it’s done well, these units will simply blend in with the surroundings of your apartment. You can also build a raised platform to store items and creating additional space underneath the structure.

3. Hanging shoe racks aren’t just for shoes

While most people only consider using a hanging shoe rack to store shoes on the back of a door, these handy storage devices can be used far more than just footwear. For instance, you can put the rack inside a pantry to store a range of items, such as cake mixes, snacks or spices. Another great option is to place the rack on the door of your laundry room to hold detergent, fabric softener or stain removers. The possibilities are endless!

4. Buy plastic boxes

Two prime areas for cluttered materials are closets and the space underneath the sink. They’re also two areas that provide the most amount of storage, so why not maximize this space for some of your essential items? The trick is to keep these items in a plastic box so they’re easy to access and won’t become a forgotten wasteland of random items. Buy a few plastic boxes to store your cleaning supplies and other items. With a little bit of organization, there will be more than enough space for other items that you need to store.

5. Remove closet doors

This is usually an option most people don’t consider, especially for those of you who live in rental properties. However, as long as you’re careful and reinstall the closet door before the end of your apartment lease, there’s no reason why you can’t remove it to make valuable floor space. Closet doors can often prevent large furniture such as a sofa from fitting into space. Alternatively, you can use a curtain closure for the closet to hide any stored items you don’t want to be visible to guests.

6. Rent a storage unit

It’s important to emphasize that this option only be taken as a last resort. We are confident that if you follow the previous five tips, you should have enough storage space for even a small apartment. However, for those of you who have a lot of possessions — including things that you just simply can’t seem to part with — renting a storage unit in your building or a commercial storage facility might be your best bet. One of the benefits of using a storage company is that the units are properly maintained, well-secured and in a climate controlled environment.
