As an international student in Australia, you will have plenty of options after completing your studies with the Student Visa Subclass 500. You can choose to return to your home country and look for opportunities here or explore the possibilities to stay back in Australia.

If you want to stay in Australia, you can either pursue a higher qualification level or go for post-study work to gain Australian work experience. This experience will be beneficial in your later life. However, if you decide to study further or gain work experience in Australia, you should check whether that is possible with your current Visa. If not, you must apply for a new visa.

For detailed information about visa options and conditions, you have to visit the Department of Home Affairs website. Go through this blog to get a complete guide on what to do after graduation in Australia.

Here are the Post-Study Options You Can Implement:-

1. Continue Your Study With Temporary Graduate Visa 485

After your graduation, you can think of continuing with further studies to obtain a higher degree. While studying in Australia, you can make the most of your time and acquire advanced technical knowledge and skills to get a job in the chosen field.

However, the Australian student visa expires when the course ends. So, for further studies, you have to apply for the Temporary Graduate Visa 485. This visa is a temporary visa that allows a student to stay here for 18 months to 4 years, based on the stream you choose and on the level of qualification.

  • There are two streams under this visa. One is the Graduate Work Stream (GWS), and the other is the Post-Study Work Stream Visa (PSWV). For the GWS, you need to have a Diploma or Trade Qualification and get a positive skills assessment. This stream allows the holder to stay for 18 months.
  • On the other hand, for the PSWV stream, you should hold either Bachelors’s or Master’s or Doctorate. You can stay for 2 to 4 years in Australia and complete your higher studies based on the qualification.

So, applying for the PSWV under the Visa Subclass 485 will be more beneficial for higher studies as you can stay for a more extended period.

2. Stay Longer in Australia

Staying longer in Australia will offer you the following options:

Enhance Skills

The temporary graduate visa 485 will enable you to stay back in Australia for one and a half years to 4 years, during which you can study and work. Thus, it can be an excellent option for international students who eye on obtaining a Permanent Residency.

Obtain Professional Work Experience in Australia

If you have achieved your degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or Accounting, you can apply for a Professional Year Program. Through a Professional Year Program, you can increase your skills, and after its completion, you can earn a maximum of 5 points in the points test of skilled migration, which can help you get an Australian PR.

Travel in Australia

After your study is completed, you can take a break and return to your home country. Alternatively, you can also choose to explore the beautiful locations across Australia. But for that, you have to apply for the Tourist Visa 600. This visa will allow you to stay for 3 to 12 months. Exploring Australia will always be a lifetime experience.

Get a Working Holiday

Are you thinking about doing a job while enjoying your holiday? That option is also available, and if your age is between 18 and 30, you can apply for a working holiday visa. This visa will allow you to travel and work in Australia for a maximum of 12 months. There are two working holiday visas, and there is a difference in the maximum length of stay.

Holding a subclass 417 visa will make you eligible to apply for a second visa after completing 3 years in a specified regional area. But the subclass 462 visa does not have this option.

Participate in The Graduation Ceremony

If you want to stay in Australia to attend the graduation ceremony of your Australian university, you will need to apply for a tourist visa to extend your stay.

Apply for Permanent Residency

Every year, thousands of students become graduates from Australian universities, and upon completion, many of them choose to continue their stay in Australia. A large portion of these students aims to obtain permanent residency in Australia.

  • The latter one is granted to New Zealand citizens who have been living in Australia over the last five years and have made significant contributions.
