Know What to Do When Your Car Breaks Down on the Highway

The question is usually not if you will have a breakdown and need to have your car towed. For most of us, it is only matter of when such an event will happen.
For those who experienced breakdowns years ago, we did not have the convenience of cell phone service to help us. However, in some Rocky Mountain area, cell service may not be available.

We cannot choose when a breakdown will occur, although preventative steps can forestall their occurrence. Regular maintenance and inspections before taking a trip will either reduce the likelihood of something happening or identify problems before they can occur.

But, just in case, carrying a flashlight and emergency warning reflectors is a good idea.
Pull Over Carefully

Most breakdowns consist of a flat tire, fuel outage, or engine malfunction. If it occurs, immediately check your mirrors before carefully steering to the right side of the road as far off the roadway as possible. If you are on a divided highway traveling in the left lane, steer off the roadway to the left. Always use your turn signal to warn oncoming traffic.
Make Your Vehicle Conspicuous

Set your hazard lights/blinkers as soon as you come to a stop to alert oncoming traffic. Raise the hood and perhaps tie a cloth to the door handle or secure in a window.
Exit the Vehicle Away from Traffic

Once safely stopped, exit through the door away from the traffic, if possible. Stay in the vehicle until you are sure it is safe to exit.

Take Note of Where You Are

To guide assistance to your location, note any mileage markers, exit signs, buildings, or other notable indicators to help others find you quickly.
Call 911 or Local Towing Service

Calling 911 is particularly important if you are in a precarious location, perhaps in or very close to the roadway. They can advise you about what to do and contact emergency services as needed.
