Bangladesh wants to mark March 25 as International Genocide Day

Bangladesh is seeking to get March 25 recognised as International Genocide Day by all nations, according to Bangladeshi Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen, who described the horrors of the 1971 genocide committed by the Pakistani military.

We are unaware of another incident of such savagery of such intensity and mayhem, he added, according to a media source. “The Genocide of Bangladesh committed in 1971 by the Pakistani military is one of the most horrific crimes in human history.”

In the early hours of March 26, 1971, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman proclaimed the independence of a sovereign nation of Bangladesh, beginning one of Pakistan’s worst genocides since World War II.

The day-long seminar on remembering and recognising the case of the genocide in Bangladesh was jointly organised by the High Commission for Bangladesh in Canada, the Bangabandhu Centre for Bangladesh Studies (BCBS) in Canada, the Liberation War Museum in Bangladesh, the Genocide Studies Center at the University of Dhaka, the Refugees Resilience Center, and Rotary Club Canada, according to a media source.

The government of Bangladesh has designated March 25 to be Genocide Day. In order to advance the demand for the 1971 genocide designation, civil society has also raised its voice, and many civil society organisations are bringing up the matter in various international fora.

According to the Bangladeshi magazine, the Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention and Genocide Watch, two highly regarded international organisations that fight to prevent genocide across the world, have acknowledged the genocide of 1971 and made declarations to that effect.

The Pakistani Army carried out “Operation Searchlight,” a preplanned military operation, on March 25, 1971, during which its forces slaughtered hundreds of thousands of Bangladeshi nationals.

The horrors of 1971 are regarded as one of history’s worst mass tragedies by the appropriate organisations.
