Head injury forces ace wrestler Bajrang Punia to skip National Games

Bajrang Punia, a Commonwealth gold medallist, won’t participate in the 2022 National Games due to a head injury he got earlier this month in Belgrade while competing in the World Championships.

At the major event, Bajrang Punia needed five stitches after suffering a head injury. Punia sustained the injury during his match before the world championships quarterfinals. He put up a valiant fightback, though, and went on to earn a bronze medal—his fourth in the world championships—while sporting a bandage on his head.

After treatment, physicians told Bajrang Punia to relax. Bajrang Punia made the decision to withdraw since the National Games’ wrestling competitions were scheduled to start on September 30.

Punia, who would have represented his native state of Haryana, said on Friday, “I won’t be playing at the National Games owing to my head injury.

“It’s sad that it took place so quickly after the occasion. Since the wound is new, healing will take some time “Wrestler from India said.

Punia is the most well-known athlete to withdraw from the National Games recently.

Olympic medalists Neeraj Chopra and PV Sindhu decided to take a vacation, but Commonwealth Games winner Sharath Kamal retired midway through his quarterfinal match on Friday due to a back issue.

The official start date of the National Games 2022 is September 27, and they will last until October 10. The activities will take place in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, and Bhavnagar, among other places. There will be no other sporting events in New Delhi.

36 sports, including both indoor and outdoor tournaments, will include more than 7,000 individuals competing, including Olympians and international medalists.
